Summit Dental Center specializes in family dentistry, including pediatric dentistry. Last time we discussed oral bacteria transfer to babies and young children. Before your child’s first tooth comes in, his/her mouth is probably free from bacteria that cause cavities, which is why it’s important to try to avoid bacterial transfer. Once your child’s first tooth erupts, he/she is at risk for this bacteria transfer. Your baby’s new tooth/teeth are in somewhat of a delicate stage when they first break through the gums because the enamel on the teeth is still developing, and therefore not tough like adult teeth. Other habits Moms, Dads and caregivers should avoid include: sharing a toothbrush with your baby/child; sharing utensils with your child; and cleaning a pacifier with your own mouth. As always, if you have questions about your little one’s dental or oral care, please ask your Summit Dental Center dentist. We value you and your family as patients and hope that you will make Summit Dental Center your main dental home.
