Medical News Today – Flouride In Water healthier for teeth later in life?

Yes…Flouride in water is supposed to make your enamel stronger, your teeth decay at a much slower rate, and thus you see less Dental bills later on in life. But it must be done at birth in the earlier stages as “Your fluoridation exposure at birth is affecting your tooth loss in your 40s and 50s, regardless of what your fluoridation exposure was like when you were 20 and 30 years old.” – According to Matthew Neidell, a Columbia University Professor.
IN fact, this study also went on to say in the State of Louisiana they did a Medicaid Study where for every 1$ the state put into water fluoridation they saw 38$ less in Teeth Care.
That’s quite a turnaround in dollars and cents.
Talk to us at Summit Dental center for your child’s dental needs. Let’s start protecting them early, together, so the teeth are realized to their fullest potential -

What came First? The Floss or the Paste?

Should I brush first or floss first? This is a common question from patient to dentist at Summit Dentists in Houston Texas. The answer is, it doesn’t really matter as long as you do a thorough job of both on a regular basis.  Brushing and flossing is the best way to remove decay-causing plaque from your teeth and help maintain optimal oral health.  Brush twice a day to clean the plaque from your teeth surface and floss to remove the plaque from in between your teeth.
How do you know if you’re doing a thorough job? Your dentist may recommend using plaque disclosing tablets available over-the-counter at pharmacies and other stores that sell oral hygiene products. Plaque disclosing tablets are chewed after you clean your mouth. Red dye will stain plaque that has not been removed, showing you spots that need additional cleaning.
In addition to your home regimen don’t forget to schedule your regular appointment!

How to get that Glamorous Movie Star Smile from Home

Everyone wants a full smile of pearly whites and by today’s standards, the whiter the better.  Unfortunately multiple visits to the dentist to get your teeth whitened becomes costly and the stains they remove might come back.  Summit Dentists in Houston believe in practicing home care and remedies, prevention starts with your regular home maintenance routine.
Baking Soda: The most commonly heard of, baking soda has many purposes including teeth whitening.  Use it plain on a damp toothbrush or mix it with toothpaste to mask the salty taste.
Strawberries: Not many people are aware that strawberries contain natural teeth whitening agents and the seeds work great for cleaning. Since they also contain sugar and acids, it’s important to brush immediately afterwards with a fluoride toothpaste.

Hydrogen Peroxide: One of the most popular home remedies, peroxide, is cheap and most people have it on hand. Chances are, you will feel some burning in your gums, but you’ll be left with clean, whiter teeth.  It’s also safe to gargle, but don’t swallow.
Its also common to mix these ingredients to make your own teeth whitening recipe, but remember that this doesn’t replace your toothbrush and toothpaste or your regular visit to the dentist!

How to Know Your Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed

Summit in Houston, Texas have many years of experience with diagnosing an infected wisdom tooth and feel it is important to be aware of the symptoms leading up to an infection.
Generally, wisdom teeth that are in need of extraction do not have any serious or noticeable symptoms, however in some cases, the teeth show obvious signs that they are not growing in properly. Some of these symptoms include pain or jaw stiffness near the impacted tooth, pain and irritation from a tooth coming in at an awkward angle, an infected swelling of the gum tissue located in the back of the mouth, crowding of other teeth, tooth decay or gum disease near the back of the mouth or a feeling of discomfort as the teeth rub against your cheek or tongue.  General health problems may also occur such as headaches, soar throat, ear aches or inflamed lymph nodes.  Typically these symptoms begin to occur when the patient is 15 to 25 years of age. Rarely do patients over the age of 30 require wisdom teeth extraction.
Its always best to get a professional opinion so if you think you may have a problem with your wisdom teeth make an appointment with your Dentist and its important to make sure to schedule your regular Dentist appointments as well.

The Dreaded Root Canal

The term “root canal” conjures terrible images in most people’s minds.  You always hear horror stories about how painful they are, or that they were not effective, or that they require several visits to your dentist which can become costly. Well, you can consider all of these things myths or half-truths.  Yes, a few can be painful and difficult, but for the most part they are the exception rather than the rule.  A vast majority go through this procedure with either no pain, or with minimal pain, mostly felt after the patient leaves the dentist office and the anesthesia has worn off.  Root canals are a common procedure done here at Summit and to benefit our patients we accept a wide variety of insurances.

Botox in Dentistry, Appropriate or Not???

There has been a lot of talk about weather to offer Botox injections in Dentists offices’, some have called it ridiculous while others believe it can be used to manage pain for dental conditions such as TMJ.  Summit Dentists have 6 locations in the greater Houston area, have been apart of the Dental Industry for many years and have heard all of the pros and cons on this particular topic.  While Botox is usually associated with cosmetic surgeons, dentists are bona fide medical professionals and this is not considered to be outside the scope of their expertise.  However, many people speculate that a dentist should continue to serve their patients by focusing on what they are trained to do.  If you are considering having cosmetic injections it doesn’t matter where you go as long as you are making your decision as an informed consumer and you go to medical professional who has gone through the proper training. Do your research and ask questions!
