Root Canals in Houston, TX

At Summit Dental Center, we aim to make root canal treatments as comfortable and pain free as possible for patients in the Houston, TX, area.

What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal removes the infection inside a tooth by deep cleaning, then sealing with a cement-like material, and finally repairing with a crown or filling.

Reasons for Root Canals

There are a few reasons why the nerve of a tooth or pulp becomes infected. Below are some reasons that may cause root canals:

  • Deep decay from hardened plaque and bacteria that have reached the pulp or nerve of the tooth
  • Dental work on the same tooth numerous times
  • Trauma that can be associated with a chipped or damaged tooth
  • Crowns and/or dental bridges that need repair

How Are Root Canals Performed?

Root canal treatments are often thought of as painful procedures. However, it is not the root canal treatment that generally hurts, but rather the pain associated with the nerve damage before the procedure takes place. A dentist or an endodontist who specializes in damaged nerves that pertain to the teeth will perform the procedure, which usually takes about two visits.

Before the procedure takes place, your qualified dental professional may use a local anesthetic to numb the area. Next, a rubber dam is placed around the tooth so that the area is kept dry from your saliva. A special instrument is used to drill a hole through the tooth to remove any bacteria, debris, or decay from the tooth. Another instrument called a root canal file is then placed in the hole and used to deep clean the whole tooth. Your tooth will then be sealed, and medication may be administered if an infection is still present.

The next steps usually take place at the second visit. Your dentist will safely fit your interior dental filling in the proper space using a cement compound called gutta-percha. A regular dental filling will be applied to the exterior hole your dentist drilled during the initial visit. If damage persists, a crown, post, or another form of repair will be applied.

Symptoms You May Need a Root Canal

If you are experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, swelling and/or discoloration of a tooth, you may need a root canal treatment. Seek medical attention at once with your dentist, as the longer you wait, the more painful and serious the issue may become. Your dentist can first help you assess your dental concerns with a consultation and x-rays in order to discuss whether a root canal procedure may be right for you. Evaluating your teeth and the surrounding tissues will help determine whether this restorative dentistry procedure is best suited for your individual needs.

Root Canal Recovery

You will want to take care during your root canal treatment by not chewing on foods with the tooth that is being restored. After your root canal treatment, you should feel pain free soon after. You may need to take over-the-counter pain relief medication the first few days following the procedure. Practicing good oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing, also remains key after a root canal.
