Scaling & Root Planing in Houston, TX
Summit Dental Center™ in Houston, TX, offers one of the most effective non-surgical ways to treat gum disease, scaling and root planing to clean deep and treat signs of gum disease.
What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing, a minimally invasive dental treatment, deep cleans your teeth and gums down to the roots of your teeth. A person may need scaling and root planing to treat gingivitis—a mild form of gum disease—or periodontitis—a more serious form of inflammation around the gums. Scaling and root planing scrapes off the hardened plaque from the gum line and removes spots from the roots of teeth that are prone to gathering bacteria and toxins. If left untreated, these pockets of bacteria and toxins will deepen, causing bone damage and eventual tooth loss.
Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing
Root planing and scaling is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. Additional benefits include:
- Relatively painless and quick non-surgical approach to prevent and treat milder cases of periodontal disease
- Much faster healing time than surgeries that include cutting, stitching or other procedures
- Prevents further gum disease from damaging gum tissue, teeth, and bones
- Easier maintenance for clean, healthy teeth and gums
How Is Scaling and Root Planing Performed?
Before the procedure, your periodontist or dentist will probably numb the area by applying a local anesthetic or numbing gel to your gums. The method of scaling is then performed, which scrapes off the tartar and bacteria from above and below the gum line. An ultrasonic tool, laser, or another manual instrument can be used for the scaling method. After this is complete, your dentist or periodontist will smooth the surface of teeth through the method of root planing, which further prevents bacteria from accumulating along root surfaces of teeth. This procedure is typically performed in one office visit.
Preparing for Scaling and Root Planing
Your dentist or periodontist can first help you assess your gum conditions and concerns in order to discuss whether the scaling and root planing procedure might be right for you.
Your qualified dental provider will use a tool called a periodontal probe to measure the plaque buildup on your teeth and gums.
If plaque buildup creates a deep pocket of 3mm or more, a professional, regular dental cleaning will not be sufficient to combat the bacteria in that area. Your dentist or periodontist will then help you prepare for your scaling and root planing procedure.
Scaling and Root Planing Recovery
After your scaling and root planing procedure, you may experience some bleeding, which will subside. Your qualified dental provider may also prescribe medications such as antimicrobial mouth rinse, antibiotics, and/or antiseptics after scaling and root planing to control bacterial infections. A follow-up appointment to measure pockets of plaque buildup is recommended to ensure other treatments or procedures are not needed. Finally, good oral hygiene including twice daily brushing and flossing remains paramount to the continued prevention of periodontal disease.
