Are You a Good Candidate for Invisalign Teeth Straightening?

Invisalign SmileSummit Dental Center is pleased to offer our patients Invisalign as an alternative to traditional metal braces! If the idea of metal wires in your mouth doesn’t hold much appeal for you, yet you find yourself wishing for a straighter smile, Invisalign may be a great option for you!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners have been around for nearly 20 years. The company brought the first invisible aligners on the market in 2000, revolutionizing orthodontic treatment and providing Americans with a more appealing – yet effective! – alternative to traditional metal braces.

Today, despite similar companies entering the clear aligner market, Invisalign continues to set the gold standard in teeth alignment.

What Issues Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign is a great solution for patients with mild to moderate teeth alignment problems. While traditional metal braces may still be the preferred treatment for severe misalignment, Invisalign is suitable to treat many dental conditions, including:

  1. Crowded Teeth

When your jaw doesn’t have enough room for your teeth, your teeth may get pushed around, jammed together or twisted. This can make effective brushing and flossing difficult, and bacteria build-up can lead to cavities and gum disease.

  1. Overbite

Most people have at least a little bit of overbite, which is when your upper teeth stick out over your lower teeth. In many people, this doesn’t create problems, but if your overbite is too large, it may lead to pain in the jaw or excessive wear and tear on your teeth.

  1. Underbite

This condition isn’t as common as an overbite, but some people find that their lower teeth jut out from their upper teeth – essentially, it’s an overbite in reverse. An underbite can lead to excessive wear on your teeth and sometimes cause speech problems.

  1. Crossbite

When some of your upper teeth are jammed inside your lower teeth, your dentist may diagnose a crossbite. This condition can become quite painful over time, resulting in bone loss in the jaw and causing your teeth to chip.

  1. Gap Teeth

As the name indicates, dentists talk about gap teeth when there is excessive space between two or more of your teeth. What’s so wrong about gap teeth? They make it easier for food particles to become stuck, potentially causing cavities and gum issues.

  1. Open Bite

Your dentist may say you have an open bite if your upper and lower teeth fail to touch. An open bite can make biting and chewing difficult.

If you’re dealing with one or more of those conditions, Invisalign may be a great solution to give you straighter teeth that look great and function even better.

Of course, Invisalign also works on small cosmetic issues like that one annoying snaggle tooth that sticks out when you smile, or that slightly bumpy row of teeth you just wish would fall in line.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign corrects misaligned teeth by gently pushing them into the right position over time with a series of clear aligners.

First, your Summit Dental Center dentist will ensure your mouth is free of cavities and address any other issues that may need to be fixed prior to starting your Invisalign treatment. Your dentist will then use high-tech equipment to take a 3D digital scan of your mouth and create a roadmap of your treatment plan. You’ll even be able to see a preview of how your teeth alignment will change over time as well as the finished result.

Once your clear aligners are custom-made in the Invisalign lab, you’ll receive a new set of aligners every two weeks. You’ll switch to a new set regularly as the aligners progressively nudge your teeth into place. Treatment lasts about 12 months for most patients.

More Things to Know About Invisalign

  • Invisalign clear aligners should typically be worn 22 hours per day
  • The aligners should be removed for eating and drinking
  • The aligners should be worn while sleeping
  • Treatment success depends on the wearers compliance with recommended daily wear-times and the prescribed switching schedule
  • “Fast-track” treatment may be available for some patients, in which aligner sets are switched every week instead of every two weeks; this is a great option for patients who want to look their best for a big event, like a wedding for example

Who is a Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is the ideal teeth straightening solution for adults who want to keep up their appearance while working on a straighter smile. Because Invisalign clear aligners are practically invisible, they allow the wearer to pursue relationship and career goals without impact to their appearance and confidence.

Summit Dental Center also offers Invisalign treatment for teens. It works just like the adult version of Invisalign, but with an extra perk – teen aligners are equipped with indicators that allow parents to monitor proper wear-times to ensure their child is compliant with the recommended treatment and wears the aligners for the right amount of time each day.

Invisalign offers treatment plans, called Phase 1, for children as young as 6 years old. Phase 1 treatment helps in the proper development of children’s jaws and arches, where these issues may be of concern.
