What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. It is made of acrylic plastic and sometimes porcelain or metal materials. A denture closely resembles natural gum tissue and teeth, either filling in the spaces created by missing teeth or preventing other teeth from shifting position.

Benefits of Dentures

There are advantages to having replacement teeth compared to either leaving teeth missing or to leaving decaying teeth in your mouth:

  • Help keep facial muscles from sagging.

  • Ability to smile confidently.

  • You will be able to eat and speak (a thing people take for granted until they lose their natural teeth).

  • Brings back confidence.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

The cost of dentures start at $1165.00. Summit Dental Center™ is happy to discuss the cost with patients during their initial consultation. The dental clinic accepts dental insurance, cash, major credit cards, and government assistance programs. Financing and payment plans are available as well.

How Is the Procedure for Dentures Performed?

Molds or impressions are made of your mouth to pinpoint accuracy. During your next visit, shape and color will be carefully assessed.

Finally, your dentist precisely adjusts and places the completed denture. The doctor will take time to ensure the dentures look natural and feel comfortable.

You may experience temporary soreness, increased saliva flow, and difficulty swallowing or speaking. These sensations will subside as your muscles and tissues rapidly acclimate to the new dentures.

Additionally, this procedure is done to achieve an improved fit of dentures. This is because it corrects any irregularities of the jaw before the creation of dentures.

How To Prepare for Dentures?

If you are considering dentures, the good news is that you are not alone! Millions of Americans have been through the process that you are considering. It is natural for you to feel apprehensive or overwhelmed when considering all the options. It is worth considering, though, that this change could give you renewed confidence, plus the ability to eat foods that you love. It’s important to remain optimistic and think about the benefits. Please try and avoid injuring your mouth, gums, or teeth and get a good night’s sleep prior to surgery.

Patients who received a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation should return home from the office immediately upon discharge. Lie down on your side with the head elevated until all the effects of the anesthetic have disappeared. You should not operate any mechanical equipment or drive a motor vehicle for at least 24 hours or longer if you feel any residual effect from the anesthetic. Watch out for dizziness. Walk slowly and take your time. Sudden changes in position can cause nausea and/or lightheadedness and even fainting. Having someone escort you to the bathroom (and any other necessary activity requiring walking) is a good idea and often necessary.
